Melasma is a very common type of pigmentation seen mostly in women, seen as a brownish butterfly patterned discoloration over the tip of the nose and cheeks.
It’s mostly caused due to sun exposure and certain medications as well as may occur during pregnancy. There are two types of melasma based on the depth of involvement
- Epidermal : this is the superficial type of discoloration that is more dark. However, because of the superficial involvement it is more easier to treat
- Dermal : this is the more deeper discoloration of the skin that’s lighter than the epidermal type and because of it deeper involvement is more difficult to treat.
